Barsham Barns

Tucked away in a truly special corner of North Norfolk encased by the county’s famously broad, beautiful skies, the private Barsham Estate is a truly unique enclave of peaceful countryside enriched by nature and untouched by time. Famous for its wide, open landscapes that stretch towards the sea, this traditional estate has been owned and farmed by the same family for generations. Enjoying a perfect location just 5 miles from Wells-Next-the-Sea and neighbouring Holkham, a stay at Barsham blends the magical offering of total tranquillity found amidst its hundreds of acres of private meadows and arable fields with all the North Norfolk coast has to offer, just a stone’s throw away.

Whether you choose make the stately manor of Meadow House your home, or seek solace in one of the sensitively converted, rural barns, you will find yourself in the very centre of a thriving estate with conservation and the preservation of natural beauty at its heart. Rolling, golden hills of wheat and barley march side by side with wetland meadows and a regenerated marshland that’s home to the area’s wonderful wading birds. A valley surrounding the River Stiffkey running quietly in front of the barns is dedicated to fostering the best environment for North Norfolk’s amazing plethora of wildlife, playing host to kingfishers, tufted ducks, lapwings and egrets along its meandering riverbanks. With 200 acres of private woodland and 300 acres of conservation sites that provide habitats for wildlife as well as pollen and nectar plots and wild hedgerows, whilst the estate’s flock of rare breed Norfolk Horn Sheep graze in paddocks next door to Meadow House.

The estate’s own Barsham Brewery can be found housed in one of their ancient farm buildings, brewing entirely homegrown and harvested Maris Otter Barley with beautifully pure water from their own bore hole and hop varieties from around the world. North Norfolk’s sea air and micro-climate help the estate produce some of the best malting barley in the world. Malted just down the road at Crisp Maltings, the team are very proud to produce an award-winning range of beers that are “Norfolk born and brewed” in the very truest sense. Private tours and tastings are on hand for guests keen to learn more and sample the Brewery’s delights.

An inspiring blend of tradition and tomorrow, Barsham is a place that continues to celebrate its heritage whilst constantly building an exciting future. Acres of rich farmland are harvested by a dedicated team with sustainability in mind and innovation at heart. New techniques are being adopted to improve the flora and fauna of the soil, whilst a specialist approach is being taken to preserve and enhance the vital ecosystem that makes this unique corner of England so special. Wheat and barley are delivered to local mills, whilst oilseed rape, sugar beet and vegetables are grown for the UK market. Pass through the estate, and you’ll see immaculately kept pathways, drives and roads, all edged with traditional wooden gates painted in the estate’s own colours. A distinctive chocolate brown and sky blue found all around Barsham, they take their cue from the family’s much loved horseracing colours, seen in action at Aintree and beyond over 100 years ago.

Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, soak in the stunning countryside or find yourself a place of peace to enjoy with family and friends, the Barsham Estate unlocks a truly rare world of tranquil, natural beauty, just waiting to be discovered.
