Wells next the Sea • Sleeps 2 • Dogs welcome
Having a great location, privileged access to the parkland and modern comfort are amongst the South Lodge's strongest points. Recently refurbished to a high standard, this lodge is perfect for couples looking to explore the surrounding area without the need to get in a car - just bring or rent a bike and the countryside is your oyster. Minimum stay of two nights, enquire with the team for more details.
Formerly located more centrally in the park, the original South Lodge was destroyed when the park was expanded in the 19th century and repositioned on the newly created southern border. The current lodge dates back to 1847 and was designed by well-known architect, S. S. Teulon.
After some years of disrepair, the lodge has been restored and once again stands as sentinel to Holkham Hall and The Triumphal Arch.
The property offers single storey accommodation. Upon entry you come straight into the sitting room with a cosy wood-burning stove.
Moving through the property leads you to the tastefully decorated bedroom with king size bed and separate shower room. For guests booking the South Lodge it must be remembered that the southern entrance has occasional agricultural traffic and, being in the park, is in an area that is actively managed for game shooting.
Dogs are welcome at the property but, whilst the property does offer a garden, we advise that dogs are acompanied and they must be kept on a lead when in the park.
Located by the boundary wall of the park, the South Lodge sits at the top of the south venue that leads up towards the Obelisk. Formerly a busy conduit for travellers, the quiet backroad gives quick access to The Burnhams, Wells-next-the-Sea and the surrounding villages.
Fantastic walking and cycling routes are right on your doorstep. Each day presents an opportunity to go in a new direction and to discover more of the beautiful estate and see why part is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Holkham to Wells-next-the-Sea walk deserves special mention. The walk takes you one way through Holkham Bay, along the sand and returns back through the pinewoods.
Holkham Hall is a 35 minute walk through the park with the beach another 15 minutes beyond. This walk represents a good opportunity to take a break for a pint at The Victoria in Holkham village!
You will also find yourself spoilt for choice when looking to eat out. The Victoria Inn in Holkham village lies on the opposite side of the park and serves fantastic classic, seasonal food and great breakfasts, whilst lunchtime fayre can also be enjoyed at The Courtyard Cafe or the Beach Cafe slightly further afield in Wells-next-the-Sea.
