Nestled in the village of South Creake, The Old Chequers has been impressively renovated and furnished to create luxury self-catering accommodation for up to 12 guests. With 6 stunning bedrooms, all of which have their own en suites, every guest can enjoy their own private space, or you can bring the whole party together in the large kitchen/diner or in the very spacious living area and conservatory. This property also has off-road parking for up to 4 cars and is dog friendly - what's not to love!
The Old Chequers is a substantial six-bedroom house with a charming kitchen, dining and family room. It has a generous double reception room that is further enhanced by a sunroom conservatory that gives access out to the private south west facing walled garden which has the River Burn running through it. Set in the quiet village of South Creake you can disconnect from the world and enjoy the tranquillity afforded by this property and its location. However, do not fret, it is connected to high speed fibre broadband and the Smart TV has Netflix, Amazon video, etc. at the click of a button, so you are not completely isolated from the modern world! There are also networked speakers throughout the house enabling music to be played simultaneously or separately in each room.
This historic pub building has been beautifully renovated and furnished to a very high standard, providing all the modern conveniences while keeping its old-world charm. It is a wonderful property and is the perfect base for large groups of friends or families looking for a peaceful, relaxing retreat in a great location.
As you enter the property, you are welcomed into the large entrance hall with its striking chequered tiled floor! Here you will find two large, comfortable armchairs to relax in and enjoy some quiet reading time, or alternatively plan your activities for the day ahead. The entrance hall provides the central access point to the living area, kitchen/dining area, courtyard garden, ground floor WC and the main staircase.
This open plan room has been cleverly sectioned in order to cater for all guests’ requirements while staying in the house. You can choose to snuggle up on the comfy sofa in front of the cosy wood burner or gather together on the large corner sofa to indulge in a good movie on the large Smart TV with surround sound system. Alternatively, you can relax in the adjoining conservatory which overlooks the pretty rear garden and watch the families of ducks frolicking in the river! The children even have their own playroom that provides a few toys and board games to keep them entertained! Adjacent to the playroom there is a boiler cupboard which is lovely and warm and therefore ideal for drying your laundry in on the airers provided. This room is the perfect space for all to enjoy their own pursuits while still spending quality time together.
Head through to the other side of the house and you will find the large open plan kitchen and dining area.
The classic kitchen has solid wood worktops and is well-equipped with everything you will need, including a large Cookmaster oven and hob with a separate grill, dishwasher, microwave, under-counter fridge, toaster, kettle and a Nespresso coffee machine.
The dining area is beautifully furnished with a solid wood table as the centre piece of the room, comfortably seating twelve guests and allowing them to enjoy long and relaxed meals all together. The dining room is also equipped with a wine and drinks fridge and drinks serving area so not to disrupt the chefs at work in the main kitchen area.
From the dining room you can also use the arched window to pass food and drinks through to the adjacent enclosed courtyard and firepit area where you can enjoy al fresco dining and relax under the fairy lit sky above you.
The utility room houses the washing machine, tumble dryer, an additional dishwasher, sink and two integrated fridge freezers. There is also a larger unit for storing additional food and a cleaning cupboard including an iron and ironing board. This is a great space that keeps the entertaining area uncluttered and organised.
Bedrooms & Bathrooms
There are six stunning bedrooms located throughout the property, all of which have their own en suites, Bluetooth speakers, exceptional quality mattresses and imported feather and down pillows and duvets, which are temperature regulating for the different seasons to ensure the best night’s sleep while staying at The Old Chequers!
Bedroom 1: The Grey Room
This bedroom has been designed to be wheelchair friendly and has an en suite wet room with a rain effect shower and power shower option, hand basin, WC and a heated towel rail. This room has been tastefully furnished with a super king size bed (which can also be made into twin beds), a solid wood wardrobe, bedside tables and two comfy armchairs which provide a relaxed seating area.
Bedroom 2: Master Bedroom
Slightly separate from all the other rooms, the master bedroom is accessed through a substantial dressing room, where you will find a wall of wardrobes and ample storage space. The bedroom itself has been beautifully furnished to provide a tranquil space in which to relax in style. Overlooking the garden and stream, this room provides a sumptuous super king size bed, an armchair and vanity/desk space. The lavish en suite benefits from underfloor heating and boasts a freestanding tub bath, a separate walk-in shower, twin hand basins, a WC and two heated towel rails.
This room also has an adjoining room which is referred to as the Ante Room and has been furnished with a corner sofa providing a comfortable area to enjoy some peace and quiet.
You can also access this side of the house through its own separate entrance from the gravel driveway. The separate entrance, which is also the side access to the garden, is the preferred area to leave your dogs if they are being left at the house on their own.
Bedroom 3: The Blue Room
This spacious room is thought of as the second master bedroom, complete with a super king size bed (which can also be split into twin beds), freestanding wardrobe, chest of drawers and a comfy armchair. There is also an en suite with a bath, separate walk-in shower, hand basin, WC and a heated towel rail.
Bedroom 4: The Green Room
The green room is the third king size bedroom and has been furnished with solid mango wood pieces including a wardrobe with built-in drawers. This en suite has a walk-in shower with rain effect and power shower options, hand basin, WC and a heated towel rail. This room overlooks the gravel driveway and enjoys the afternoon sun.
Bedroom 5: The Yellow Room
The yellow room has a king size bed with a wardrobe, armchair and a full length mirror. This bedroom enjoys the wonderful afternoon sun and looks out onto the gravel driveway. The en suite to this bedroom has a bath with a power shower over, WC, hand basin and a heated towel rail.
Bedroom 6: The Taupe Room
At the far end of the house on the first floor is the taupe bedroom which has a solid wood king size bed, bedside tables and matching wardrobe. This bedroom has an en suite with a walk-in rain effect shower with an additional hand-held shower attachment, hand basin, WC and a heated towel rail.
To the rear of the property there is a beautiful large garden which has the “River Burn” running through it – step across the bridge over the stream and you will find yourselves on the large lawn surrounded by attractive mature borders packed with quintessentially British flowers, shrubs and bushes. There is also a Webber charcoal BBQ to enjoy on those warm summer evenings!
Please ensure that children and dogs are always supervised when outside in the garden! Please also note that there are small tunnels where the stream enters and leaves the garden and therefore is not secure.
To the side of the property there is a private enclosed courtyard offering an additional social space that has been thoughtfully decorated with string fairy lights to create a relaxed/romantic atmosphere. Equipped with a formal table and chairs which is perfect for al fresco dining, and a relaxed seating area surrounding a fire pit, ideal for keeping warm on those cooler evenings.
At the front of the property there is off-road parking for up to 4 cars on the gravel driveway, which can be enclosed by the manual gate.
History & Location
The Old Chequers, previously the Chequers Inn, is nestled in the quiet village of South Creake on the North Norfolk Coast. The Inn was the central hub of South Creake village for over 300 years as the local pub to the neighbouring brewery, which is no longer in operation.
You are conveniently located within a 10-minute drive to both Burnham Market and Wells-next-the-Sea and a 15-minute drive to the famous Holkham Estate and Holkham Beach. Within the village of South Creake there are a few small wayside stalls that stock locally grown fruit and vegetables, cakes, eggs and the summer delicacy, Samphire. There is also a large playing field, which has a children’s play area, bowling green, two grass tennis courts and football pitches.
