There are plenty of wonderful ways to experience the beauty of the Norfolk coast, but few make you pause like travelling under sail.
Leaving Wells-next-the-Sea as the morning tide carried us out into the salt marshes, the noise of the harbour slowly fading behind us. Fishing boats became distant specks on the horizon, the chatter of the quay disappeared, and the only sounds left were the gentle lapping of the water against the hull and the occasional call of an oystercatcher overhead.
What followed was a few hours of pure bliss: drifting with the tide through the salt marshes, breakfast cooked at anchor amongst flowering sea lavender, a swim in hidden creeks and a reminder that some of Norfolk’s most memorable experiences happen away from dry land.
Some mornings stay with you long after your holiday ends. This was one of them.

The Sail: Drifting into the Salt Marshes
“It’s just you, the sea, the salt marsh and the sky.”
Stepping aboard and slipping quietly out of Wells Harbour, you could almost feel the tribulations of everyday life being carried away with the tide. As the sails caught the wind and the engine fell silent, everything seemed to slow down.
And then the exceptional landscape unravelled around us. Salt marsh stretched towards the horizon, interrupted only by winding tidal channels and the periodic flock of wading birds lifting into the air. The calm that settled over us was almost instant, travelling at the pace of the wind and noticing all the small details you would otherwise have rushed past.
One of our skippers, Jamela, explained that what keeps her returning isn’t just the sailing, but watching the marshes change through every season:
“Being able to see how the marsh changes throughout the year is something really special.”
In spring, fresh green begins to emerge across the marshes. By summer, carpets of sea lavender turn the landscapes purple, whilst autumn brings rich golden tones before winter reveals a quieter, more dramatic beauty. Every trip offers a different perspective on this ever-changing coastline.

A Swim in the Marsh Creeks
“Being able to see how the marsh changes throughout the year is something really special.”
With the boat bobbing gently at anchor beside the salt marshes, we settled amongst blankets of soft sea purslane before climbing into the sun-warmed water for a swim – it felt wonderfully secluded, our own little slice of paradise. Floating in the creek, surrounded by one of Norfolk’s most important coastal habitats, it was impossible not to feel complete contentment.
While we drifted in the water, Jamela shared an unforgettable swim she’d had near Brancaster on a still summer night.
“The stars were above me, and the bioluminescence made it feel like there were stars in the water too.”
It was clear to us just how deeply the skippers know and love this coastline.

Breakfast at Anchor
“Every trip is different, and it’s always an adventure.”
After our swim, the smell of breakfast soon drifted across the marshes.
As it sizzled away, we learnt that even the coffee has a story. Coastal Exploration Co.’s own coffee is transported on a schooner under sail from South America – a small detail that perfectly reflects the company’s ethos of celebrating a slower, sustainable way of life.
Before long, thick rashers of bacon, perfectly cooked eggs, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms were tucked into freshly seeded buns, while steaming mugs of coffee warmed everyone after the morning’s dip.
There was something unforgettable about eating breakfast outdoors, hair salt-tinged and soaked from swimming, surrounded by nothing but marsh, sea and sky – it was difficult to image a better place to start the day.

More Than Just a Boat Trip
“It’s so much more than just a sail.”
As we made our way back towards Wells, conversation turned to what keeps people coming back to the water.
Alfie reflected that the sea teaches you an important lesson:
“The tides always change.”
It’s a practical lesson when sailing, but perhaps one that also stretches beyond the water. The sea has a way of encouraging you to pause, be patient and appreciate where you are in the moment. The experience is about immersing yourself in the changing landscape, noticing the wildlife, and reconnecting with nature at its own pace.
Planning Your Own Sailing Adventure
If you’re visiting North Norfolk and looking for an experience that feels genuinely unique, this is one to put at the top of your list.
It’s not about adrenaline or ticking off the attractions. It’s about spending a few hours immersed in one of the UK’s most remarkable coastal landscapes – and returning to shore with a completely different appreciation of it.
Coastal Exploration Company specialises in intimate sailing experiences that blend adventure with nature, heritage, and mindful living. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best way to explore somewhere isn’t by trying to see as much as possible, but lingering long enough to notice what’s already there in front of you.
