Discover Norfolk

Snettisham

Away from the tourist honeypots of North Norfolk, Snettisham boasts an unsung stretch of coastline that is the perfect place for an atmospheric escape, where each season unveils its own sense of magic.

Local Features

Barely a few miles from the royal residence of Sandringham, this well-kept secret is for the wild at heart. Think sparkly waters and blustery walks, endless skies and ever-changing mudflats, beautiful saltmarshes and charming inns propped up by cheery locals.

Turn your attention to the narrow streets and pretty buildings of the village itself, however, and you’ll discover this seemingly sleepy village is bustling with unexpected finds. Micro-bakeries and coffee shops, award-winning eateries and a centuries-old coaching inn that feels like a tonic for tired souls with its twisting passages and hidden corners, low ceilings and old beams, pamment floors and log fires.

The History of Snettisham

Shrouded in mystery and history, Snettisham is a rarity. A place drenched in thousands of years of tales and fables, sagas and finds. Yeah. That’s what Snettisham is notably known for: its finds. From the Snettisham Hoard of 1950 to the Jeweller’s Hoard of 1985 this village is the birthplace of nationally important archaeological discoveries.

Roman artefacts, Iron Age gold torques and a collection of ingots. But the real centrepiece of this coastal village is 14th Century church of St. Mary, the spectacular 175-foot spire piercing the skies above the ancient woodland below, just as it has for seven-hundred years.
