Discover Norfolk

Holme-Next-the-Sea

Holme-Next-The-Sea might just be Norfolk’s best kept secret.

Local Features

Despite its pride of place on the iconic coastal road, quietly nestled between the bustle of Thornham and the hustle of Old Hunstanton, it is a stretch of Norfolk that possesses spell-binding beauty. Forget grand collisions of waves meeting rocks, this is where the sea and land seep into each other via intricate salt marshes and a nature reserve is tucked into the dunes.

It’s a place with space and the freedom to roam wild on the dunes, soaking up the long summer evenings when the sun sets into the sea, while the winter months have their own beauty, the wind hugging your face, the northern lights flashing across the sky in rare bursts and the three mile beach is all yourself. Actually, that’s what makes Holme such a secret; you can be alone here at any time of year.

The History of Holme-Next-the-Sea

Holme has a unique and dramatic history unlike anywhere else; an accolade bestowed on its shores after the discovery of Stonehenge, an ancient tree ring monument that dates back to the spring of 2049BC. Fifty-five split and round posts were closely spaced to form a circular palisade 3 metres high and 6.6 metres in diameter, the timbers all felled at the same time.

Yet the most breathtaking part of this historic is the soundscape that floats off the sea, across the salt marshes and over the wet woodlands for they would have been the same as those heard 4000 years ago.
