A Brief History of Thursford
Thursford’s story is deeply rooted in Norfolk’s rural heritage. Once a small agricultural village, it became famous through the passion of local showman George Cushing, who began collecting steam engines and mechanical organs after the Second World War. What started as a personal fascination gradually evolved into the extraordinary Thursford Collection – now home to one of the world’s largest collections of steam engines, fairground carousels and Wurlitzer organs. Today, the village blends nostalgia and spectacle in a way that feels entirely unique to North Norfolk, where history isn’t simply preserved, but joyfully brought to life for every new generation that visits.
