Discover Norfolk

Wells-Next-the-Sea

Wells-Next-the-Sea stretches mile after mile in all directions, lined by pastel-coloured huts, Wells Beach is one of the most picturesque strips of sand you could ever envisage.

Local Features

A soul-stirring place to head at sunset as you stroll past the schooners and trawlers, along the raised sea wall and beyond the ancient coastal pines to where the sun glimmers on the water. And yet this iconic shoreline is only a piece of the postcard.

Wells is a place with a unique buzz. The hustle and bustle of a seaside town done differently. Upmarket yet down to earth, this harbour town has it all: award-winning fish n’ chip shops and uniquely vibrant coffee stops, vintage arcades and gastro-pubs, floating cafés and cosy hideaways, ice cream parlours and incredible carnivals. That’s the wonder of Wells; a wonder that is best enjoyed on a wander.

The History of Wells-Next-the-Sea

Sheltered from the sea by winding salt marshes and a maze of tidal creeks, this old harbour town still harks back to its golden era of the Tudor times, when it was one of the great ports of the period. Supplying grain to London, malt to everywhere, and fresh fish far n’ wide, the iconic maltings, granaries and vessels still stand proud today as a reminder of its former glory, while the rest of this hustling, bustling port refuses to rest on its 600-year-old laurels.
